Smithing is a F2P skill that can be trained by both F2P and P2P methods. It allows you to convert (smelt) the various ores which are obtained through Mining to metal bars. It also allows you to create items such as armor and weapons by hammering the metal bars on any Anvil.
Converting ores to metal bars requires a Furnace which can be found in various places in the game. The success rate of making these bars is 100% except for the Iron bars which have a success rate of 50%, but by using Ring of forging, Blast furnace or the Superheat spell you can increase their success rate to 100%.
In this guide, we will be focusing on the best P2P methods to get you to level 99 Smithing as efficient as possible, in addition to some money-making methods for those who are interested since Smithing is a great skill to use for money-making. Keep in mind that you will have to spend a serious amount of money to buy ores from the Grand Exchange to get to level 99 as fast as possible.
Almost all of the methods below are Semi-AFK.
Make sure to check out all 23 OSRS skills in our relevant guide.

OSRS Smithing 101
Normal Furnaces
Normal Furnace, Old School Runescape
Smithing is a simple skill to understand and it’s not complicated as you might think. To make metal bars, you’ll have to obtain ores of the desired metal. Getting these ores is either by mining them yourself or buying them directly from the Grand Exchange. You can still get them by killing specific monsters or by buying them from some stores, but the most efficient way is to buy them directly from the Grand Exchange.
To use the Furnace, you will have to right-click on the ore and use it on the Furnace to choose the type and number of the related item. Usually, the best Furnace to use is the one located in Edgeville as it’s so close to a bank and doesn’t require anything to use.
Anvils
Anvil, Old School Runescape
To start creating armors, weapons, and ammunition using these metal bars, you will need to have a hammer and a place with an Anvil. Right-click the bars and use it on the Anvil then choose the type and the number (depending on the number of bars in your inventory) of the item you wanna create.
After choosing the item, the game will automatically consume the bars in your inventory depending on the chosen item.
Anvil Smithing Bronze List, Old School Runescape
Blast Furnace
Mine Cart to Keldagrim, Old School Runescape
There is also the Blast Furnace which is very good in terms of saving money and time, but it has some requirements. It is located in Keldagrim which requires starting The Giant Dwarf Quest and you can access it through the mine cart near the Grand Exchange.
You need to have level 60 in Smithing which is only a recommended level or you will have to pay 2,500 coins for every 10 minutes you spend there. The Blast Furnace also gives 100% success rate to smelting Iron bars, unlike the normal Furnaces.
The Blast Furnace needs some mechanics operations that can be done by yourself and it makes the process much slower. That’s why you will have to use it while being in one of the 15 Blast Furnace Worlds where you can pay 72K coins in a coffer for each hour spent there to get the help of the dwarves. The dwarves will take care of the machine and you will only have to deposit your ores inside it.
Blast Furnace, Old School Runescape
One of the advantages of the Blast Furnace is halving the required amount of Coal pieces to smelt a specific metal bar and thus spending less money.
Obtaining Ice gloves is also recommended to speed up the process, otherwise, you will have to fill an empty bucket with water to cool down the bars so you can pick them. To obtain these Ice gloves, you either have by completing the Heroes’ Quest or by killing the Ice Queen which is located in the caverns under the White Wolf Mountain.
Keep in mind that Ice gloves require level 50 Mining to equip.
Using the Blast Furnace is simple:
1- Bring the required ores from the nearby bank chest to your inventory.
2- Deposit the ores on the Conveyor Belt of the Furnace.
3- Use a bucket of water on the bars to cool down or just equip Ice gloves and pick the bars from the bar dispenser
4- Deposit the bars in your bank chest and repeat.
For bars requiring Coal pieces: Empty the Coal bag and use the Coal pieces on the Conveyor Belt after depositing the Primary ore ( Step 2).

Useful Smithing Gear & Items
The following items are useful and some of them are recommended to achieve the maximum Smithing XP gained per hour.
Ice gloves
Ice gloves are very recommended when using the Blast Furnace to speed up the whole process, it can be obtained by killing the Ice Queen in the caverns under the White Wolf Mountain even without Completing the Heroe’s Quest.
Using Ice gloves requires level 50 Mining.
Ring of forging
It gives 100% success rate to smelting Iron bars, but it’s only useful if you are using a normal Furnace since the Blast Furnace provides a success rate of 100% for every metal bar. The ring has 140 charges and it will crumble to dust after smelting 140 Iron bars.
Goldsmith gauntlets
A very recommended item to obtain if you are smelting Gold bars in the Blast Furnace. These gauntlets give you more than DOUBLE (2.5 times more) the Smithing XP you normally gain from smelting Gold bars. It is a HUGE boost to your XP/Hour rates and makes smelting Gold bars the fastest way to level 99 Smithing in the game.
Goldsmith gauntlets are obtainable after completing the Family Crest Quest by bringing the Steel gauntlets (Reward from Family Crest) in addition to 25K coins to Avan who is located in Al Kharid mine.
Coal bag
A very important item and required to gain the maximum Smithing XP per hour especially when using the Blast Furnace to smelt any metal bar requires Coal pieces. It’s used to store up to 27 pieces of Coal which allows you to smelt more bars per inventory, thus more XP and money per hour.
It is also very useful for making money once you obtain the Smithing cape after achieving level 99 as the number of Coal pieces stored goes up to 36 pieces when the cape is equipped.
To obtain the Coal bag, you need to pay 100 golden nuggets to Prospector Percy’s Nugget Shop in the Motherlode Mine.
The table below explains the advantage of the Coal bag in the Blast Furnace.
Bar Type | Coal Needed (In Bag+In Inventory=Total) | Primary Ore | # of Free Inventory Spaces | Bar Yield | Smithing Experience |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Steel | 27 + 0 = 27 | 27 Iron ore | 0 | 27 | 472.5 |

Note that this method is very expensive but is the fastest Smithing training method in OSRS.
Alternative Methods to Level Smithing
Follow the methods below if the main guide is partially unavailable for you. Note that it is always better to follow the main training guide.
Smelting Adamant Platebodies
Adamant Platebody Smithing, Old School Runescape

Smelting an Adamant bar requires level 70 Smithing and its made of 6 Coal pieces plus 1 Adamantite ore. It can also be obtained by killing Adamant dragons as well as other monsters.
Adamanantite ores can be obtained by Mining any Adamantite Rock in the game which requires level 70 Mining. It can also be obtained by killing some bosses such as Skotizo.
Same as the Bronze & Iron Daggers, use the western Varrock Anvil to do it more efficiently.
Smelting Dart Tips
Mithril Dart Tips Smithing, Old School Runescape
Recommended Level: 54
Required items: Hammer
Completion of: The Tourist Trap Required
Darts/Hour: 10~11K
Smelting Dart tips is a good method to be AFK as it only uses one bar of the desired metal to make 10 tips unlike the majority of the other items. The lowest level you can start smelting Dart tips is 4 but it is always recommended to use this method only when you can smelt Mithril Dart tips which require level 54 Smithing, so you can gain decent XP per hour.
Use the bars on an Anvil and choose Dart tips so it can automatically consume all the bars in your inventory 1 by 1. Use the Western Varrock Anvil to be as efficient as possible.
The XP gained per hour is depending on the type of Dart tips you are smelting, each type requires different Smithing level and gives different XP rates as well as profits.
Check the table below for more details.
Level | Item | Materials | XP (per bar) |
---|---|---|---|
4 | Bronze Dart x10 | Bronze Bar | 12.5 |
19 | Iron Dart x10 | Iron Bar | 25 |
34 | Steel Dart x10 | Steel Bar | 37.5 |
54 | Mithril Dart x10 | Mithril Bar | 50 |
74 | Adamant Dart x10 | Adamant Bar | 62.5 |
89 | Rune Dart x10 | Rune Bar | 75 |
Note that you can make decent money while being semi-AFK which gives good value to this method but the XP rates will be so slow compared to some other methods.
Making Money with Smithing & the Blast Furnace
Blast Furnace Smithing, Old School Runescape
Recommended level: 60
Starting: The Giant Dwarf Quest
Required Items: Ice Gloves, Coal Bag
Recommended Items: High Agility level, any Weight-reducing gear & Stamina potions
The best money-making method related to Smithing is without a doubt the Blast Furnace. Smelting bars that require Coal pieces in the Blast Furnace is very profitable as you can make profits up to 1M per Hour. It is recommended to not go below smelting Steel bars as the profits will be much lesser.
This method also gives a decent XP/Hour ratio and the table below shows more details for each type of metal bar smelted starting from Steel bars.
Level | Bar | Profit | Bars/Hour | XP/Hour |
---|---|---|---|---|
30 | Steel Bars | 750K + | 5400 | 94,500 |
50 | Mithril Bars | 700K + | 3600 | 108,000 |
70 | Adamantite bars | 1M + | 2700 | 101,250 |
85 | Runite bars | 1.2M + | 2150 | 107,500 |
If you wanna make bars per trip check the table below (Coal Bag is needed).
Bar Type | Coal Needed (In Bag+In Inventory=Total) | Primary Ore | # of Free Inventory Spaces | Bar Yield | Smithing Experience |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Steel | 27 + 0 = 27 | 27 Iron ore | 0 | 27 | 472.5 |
Mithril | 27 + 9 = 36 | 18 Mithril ore | 0 | 18 | 540 |
Adamantite | 27 + 12 = 39 | 13 Adamant ore | 2 | 13 | 487.5 |
Runite | 27 + 13 = 40 | 10 Runite ore | 4 | 10 | 500 |
The table below shows the needed trip pattern for each metal bar to a full inventory of bars (27 x bar) through doing continues trips (with a Coal bag).
Level | Bar | Trip 1 | Trip 2 | Trip 3 | Trip 4 | Trip 5 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
30 | Steel bars | 27 Coal, 27 Iron, Collect | ||||
50 | Mithril bars | 54 Coal | 27 Coal, 27 Mith, Collect | 27 Coal, 27 Mith, Collect | ||
70 | Adamantite bars | 54 Coal | 27 Coal, 27 Addy, Collect | |||
85 | Runite bars | 27 Coal, 27 Rune | 54 Coal | 54 Coal, Collect | 27 Coal, 27 Rune | 54 Coal, Collect |
Following this table will prevent you from running back to the bank with ores left in your inventory thus is the most efficient way to do it.
Please check the Introduction for Noobs section if you don’t know how does the Blast Furnace work.
Conclusion
Smithing is an easy and quick skill to train especially if you are using the Gold bars method. You should always aim for reaching a high Smithing level as quick as possible instead of making money since you will be able to make money more efficient at the higher levels of Smithing.
